A Randomized, Split-Face Comparison of Facial Hair Removal With the Alexandrite Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) System
Study Conclusions “The alexandrite laser resulted in significantly longer hair-free intervals, a larger reduction in hair counts and greater patient satisfaction than the IPL . It is probable that this is due to the specific wavelength, short pulse duration and single pulse delivery of the [Alexandrite] laser, resulting in more follicular destruction than the IPL.”
Clearstone Analysis The alexandrite laser is a far superior modality of permanently destroying hair follicles than an IPL. In fact, IPLs aren’t even lasers, which completely defeats the benefits of a process called Selective Photothermolysis. S.P. is the ability to selectively target the melanin within a hair follicle while not damaging surrounding tissue. IPLs, however, use a broad band of visible light, setting off a lot more of what you don’t need than what you do. As a result, IPLs must be powered very high to destroy hair, so high that they oftentimes cause burns as well as expose the skin to UV light.
