What is Chemical Exfoliation?
Chemical Peels are a wonderful way to safely and effectively renew your skin by promoting exfoliation and cellular skin turnover. A tailored blend of acids, vitamins, and skin lighteners are applied to promote the renewal of skin – leading to a brighter and more even skin tone and complexion. Chemical exfoliation treatments can effectively treat dark spots, or hyper-pigmentation, reduce the appearance of scar tissue, resolve acne, as well as provide the benefits of anti-aging by reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

What to Expect
During your chemical peel experience, our highly trained and licensed aestheticians begin your treatment by thoroughly cleansing your skin so that the active ingredients of the chemical peel can effectively penetrate and produce excellent results.
Susceptible areas are first protected and then the chemical peel process begins by application of the first layer of the customized formulation of active ingredients. The layering process is continued in such a way to ensure even application of the chemical peel while also allowing your aesthetician to attain the desirable clinical endpoint.
During the treatment you are likely to feel a hot sensation, which can be controlled and neutralized if necessary. You can resume normal activities immediately following your treatment, but must avoid increasing your skin’s temperature as well as adhere to our post peel instructions.
Depending upon your treatment, visible exfoliation usually begins on the second day following your treatment and is preceded by the feeling of tightness or itchiness. After several days of exfoliation, your complexion will begin to appear brighter and tighter while also enjoying a newfound softness and glow. Full results are usually best judged several weeks following your treatment, depending upon the formulation of your chemical peel. A series of treatments may be necessary to obtain optimal results.
Risks of Chemical Exfoliation
While generally very safe and effective, as with any aesthetic treatment, certain risks exist with chemical peels and can vary depending upon the strength of the formulation used, your natural skin tone, and your unique response factor.
While very rare, guests may experience post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation (PIH) following a chemical peel. While we find that for some individuals the first treatment brings existing pigmentation closer to the surface of the skin and is effectively exfoliated with additional treatments, other individuals may experience the darkening of skin due to the inflammatory process of the treatment. Usually temporary in nature, PIH can nevertheless take many months to resolve. Clearstone will advise you of the application of post peel soothing balms with active ingredients intended to reduce inflammation and mitigate the chances of PIH formation.
Purging is sometimes seen in our guests, which is believed to be the body’s way of “pushing out” the dead skin as well as other debris from the treated area. Usually resembling acne, those that experience a purging effect will see the collection of white blood cells and other fluid with an associated superficial infection that usually self-resolves with easy care considerations. At times, we may need to provide additional medical attention to actively treat the infected areas with antibiotics. PIH can form following this purging effect, necessitating additional exfoliation treatments or a daily correction regime.
Some of the additional risks include allergic reactions to active ingredients, excessive burning to the treated area and hyper-sensitivity to heat or sun light following your treatment. Clearstone will provide a consultation prior to your chemical peel to thoroughly review the risks and benefits of chemical peels as well as to provide the necessary guidance so as to increase the effectiveness of treatments while reducing these risks.
